"Harvest"
Gouche and Acrylic on Paper
33 x 45 cm

When asked to create a piece of art on the theme of coffee, the first thing that came to mind was people. Now that coffee is such a commodity in our culture, it can be easy to forget the hard work that’s put in by the people at the top of the production line, in countries such as Guatemala, Peru and Ethiopia. Harvest simply depicts two hands harvesting coffee beans in a busy, colourful composition designed to create a sense of movement and fluidity. I chose to depict hands rather than faces or bodies, as hands are, in many ways, symbolic of what it means to be a person in the working world. Reminiscent of giving, receiving and connecting.
