Coffee was drunk in the 9th century; Kaldi an Ethiopian goat-herder observed his goat acting strangely after eating the
plant!! The Ottomans made Kahve (coffee) and Arabia, Qahwah; said to give power(quwwa). Harar in Ethiopia became
coffee’s trading centre. Sheik Omar was famous for concocting a drink made from boiling the beans in water. Gabriel de
Clieu introduced coffee to Marinique and soon the world “discovered” coffee. Leaf rust was “cured” using a new strain
of bean, Canephora. Brazil, Columbia, Vietnam, Indonesia and Ethiopia now export coffee and a vast range of coffee
drinks and coffee flavoured products are consumed.
