"A Window To The World"
Oil and Acrylic Painting on Canvas
60 cm x 90 cm
Imagine: you choose the seat next to the window in a coffee shop. It just rained but the sun is back again. You look out
of the window, getting absorbed in thought while taking a sip. What’s on your mind?
I interviewed a Tanzanian, ‘We are extremely kind and very collective. We solve our social issues together. This is what
defines us’, she said. Her confidence and pride in her country impressed me. In some parts of Tanzania, they may not
even have access to clean water. But their positivity in life is never undermined by the rough living conditions.
In this scene, the children are queuing up for water with their buckets. The spirit of Tanzania is exhibited through the
arrangement of water buckets which were in the colours of the national flag. The tough condition seen ‘outside the
coffee shop’ (water problem in Tanzania) is contrasting with the pleasant condition ‘inside’ (enjoying a cup of coffee in
the shop). Through this art piece, I would like to raise the awareness of clean water access in poor communities, and call
for reflection on what we can do more to reduce the gap.
