"Morning Poison"

The model roasts beans in his Crown Heights garage and sells them locally in packages labelled “This Is Coffee”. After a personal delivery of freshly roasted beans the subject sat in my studio for a live drawing while drinking French-pressed brew. 
We thought that this artwork would showcase the feeling of waking up and instantly reaching for a mug of morning poison before anything else. It is inferred that the subject is still in bed and the cup remains full as he stares into space, unfocused and simply taking in the warmth of the coffee.
